Meet the Makers
Get to know the faces behind the brand with our Meet the Makers Q&A. Whether it’s our designers, accountants or sales guys, we’ve asked the team some probing questions to give you an insight into how we work at Joseph Joseph. This week it’s Product Technologist Andrew's turn…
What’s the best bit about your job?
I really enjoy visiting the factories which make our products, particularly those in the Far East. It’s hard work as the days are often very long, however as a company we feel it’s really important to have a good relationship with our suppliers and to discuss the products face to face.
Back in the office, I spend a lot time in the JJ Test Kitchen testing and breaking products. This is really fun but also very important in finding out how a product is likely to fail, and how we can prevent this from happening later down the line. Not all products make it through the development testing which means we have to go back and redesign the product. Only once we are totally satisfied will we allow the product to proceed to mass production.
What’s the oddest thing you’ve had to do in your role at Joseph Joseph?
My job often involves testing which might be considered a little odd to the outsider! Recently I peeled over two hundred garlic cloves to test a new concept. Not only did I receive strange looks buying this much garlic, I also smelt of garlic for almost a week afterwards!
Sometimes I spend the day testing the hinge durability of our folding Chop2Pot chopping boards. The hinge needs to last a minimum of 10,000 folds, thankfully the factory has a machine to do this!
All-time favourite Joseph Joseph product?
I really like the Elevate Silicone headed utensils, they’re so versatile. They can be used in all types of cookware and are heat resistant to very high temperatures. I love the colours and the Elevate feature which helps to reduce mess whilst cooking – they’re always the first utensil I choose from the drawer!
What would you choose for your last meal?
I love fresh mussels in a garlic and wine sauce, served with French fries and freshly baked crusty bread on the side. For dessert, it would have to be a Crème Brulee.
Favourite TV show right now?
I’m really into Formula 1 and like to watch the races live on TV. My team (McLaren) aren’t doing particularly well this season, but they’ve made good progress and 2017 is shaping up to be more promising!
Any guilty pleasures?
Cars and motorbikes… basically anything with a petrol engine and wheels!
I couldn’t live without…
Holidays in hot sunny places. I love the UK (except for the weather), but it’s nice to venture further afield and get away from the hustle and bustle of London.
