Love Food Hate Waste’s Top 5 Freezer Tips
We asked Love Food Hate Waste for their most useful freezing hints and tips. Here’s what they came up with…
ONLY DEFROST WHAT YOU NEED
Freeze food in individual portions. You don’t want to have to defrost a curry big enough to feed ten when you’re only feeding two of you. This is also great for meat and fish - both fresh and cooked. Freeze individual sausages, slices of bacon, chops etc. wrapping them in greaseproof paper so that they don’t stick.
Always wrap the food well in the freezer and don’t forget to label everything with the date and what it is- to avoid UFO’s (unidentified frozen objects) at the back of the freezer. DEFROST I T SAFELY When
It Lasts Longer Than You Think
The freezer acts like a pause button on food and so you can freeze it right up to the use-by date. It also stores safely for years - it’s just that the quality will start to deteriorate after 3 months. Ideally use within 6 months but don’t panic if it’s been there longer. It will just need longer, slower cooking and a bit more added flavour likes herbs and spices
Defrost it safely
When you want to make use of it, defrost overnight in the fridge, use within 24 hours and cook till piping hot. If you need it quickly, food can be defrosted safely in the microwave.
Make the most of your freezer
You can freeze pretty much everything! There are a couple of exceptions such as soft cheese as the texture goes a bit strange! Try having a freezer night one night a week. This way if your plans change this can be the meal that doesn’t get wasted.
