The anatomy of Tota 2

Identifying the problems

Traditional baskets can take up a lot of space, and are heavy to lift, meaning piles of clothes get decanted for sorting. They then typically get carried in people’s arms to their washing machines, falling onto the floor as they manoeuvre awkwardly to the machine. It’s a timely process that often means countless trips to the machine and back.

With Tota and Tota 2, we wanted to offer a solution to these problems.

Designing the solution – the ideation phase

In our design phase for Tota, we prioritised a prototype that simplified this process. Devising a solution that incorporated removable tote bags would solve the problem of laundry being difficult to carry to the machine, and had the added benefit of creating compartments inside the basket for easy separation of clothes.

Removable compartments meant loading washing would be a simple case of picking up the bag and shaking it directly into the machine via the helper handles on the base of the bags. We also prioritised having an easy-return design so that the bags would slot into place in the basket without the user needing to faff around.

Testing is really important for us. It enables us to check the geometry of our designs and make sure that we can achieve a really seamless user experience. With Tota 2, it was key to ensure the lid was easy to take on and off and to dock on the side of the product for the user.

The design USPs

Easy sorting

Internal tote bags let you sort laundry as you fill the basket, saving time on laundry day. Separate compartments keep lights and darks organised from the start, so every load is ready to go when you are.
Easy carrying

Removable tote bags make it easy to carry laundry to the washing machine without awkward juggling or dropped socks. A helper handle on the base makes it simple to tip clothes straight into the drum.
Smarter design

The updated docking lid clips neatly to the side of the basket, keeping both hands free while loading or removing bags. A premium felt lid keeps laundry out of sight between loads, and faster assembly means it's ready to use in under three minutes.
