The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning with Pets
Share article
Cats and dogs are part of the family. But loveable rogues that they are, pets carry their fair share of mess, fur and dirt, meaning a little extra maintenance is needed to keep things clean.
In this guide we’ve brought together our tips for cleaning with pets so you can learn how to rid your home of cat and dog hair, once and for all.
The first tip? Keep your pet well-groomed to avoid excess shedding of hair in the first place. Some pets are sensitive to combs and grooming brushes, so look out for grooming gloves which can be a subtle and effective way of removing excess hair from more sensitive animals. When you do your grooming, it’s recommended to do it outdoors so that the fur you remove doesn’t settle on your furniture and carpets.
How to remove pet hair from carpet
Pet hair in your carpet is unsightly and can carry odours with it. If you’re wondering how to get rid of dog hair, the vacuum cleaner is your friend. The first stage of removing pet hair from a carpet is always to take your vacuum cleaner to your pet’s favourite little corners to clean up as much hair as possible. It takes a very strong vacuum (often one designed specifically for pets) to really remove cat hair from carpets, though.
The good news is our new CleanTech™ 2-in-1 Carpet Cleaning Tool is here to answer your prayers. Triple-action rubber blades on one side are perfect for thoroughly scraping hair from rugs or long pile carpets, while a sturdy, brass comb on the other side is just right for short pile carpets.
How to remove pet hair from furniture
In the same way that dogs and cats can leave their fur in your carpet, your sofa and chairs can also become velcro for hair. Our clever CleanTech™ 3-in-1 Pet Hair Removal Tool makes cleaning furniture easy, with a fabric-friendly rubber edge, allowing you to scrape hair from surfaces without damaging fabric. Its hook design means you can get deep into the crevices of your furniture and its clip shape allows you to trap and then hygienically dispose of the hair in the bin afterwards.
How to get rid of pet and dog hair in the car
Where we go, our pets go. When canine and feline friends travel with us in the car, they can leave behind hair and dirt in their path. So, how to get rid of dog hair in the car? The solution is regular vacuuming with a handheld vacuum, and combing your furniture with a cleaning tool such as our CleanTech™ 3-in-1 Pet Hair Removal Tool, which works brilliantly on car seats.
Cleaning hard floors after pets
To clean hard wood and laminate floors after pets have made their marks, a regular cleaning routine is key. Sweep up any mess regularly using our CleanTech™ Wall Mounted Broom and CleanTech™ Dustpan and Brush Set.
How often should you mop with pets at home?
Frequency of mopping depends on how muddy your pet’s paws are, but a good guide is to mop every fortnight in high-traffic areas and every month in less busy spots.
Mopping in pet homes is best done with a microfibre mop such as our CleanTech™ 2-in-1 Spray Mop with Replacement Pad and hot water, so that you don’t have to use strong disinfectants or sanitisers that might irritate your dog or cat’s paws, skin or lungs.
How to clean up after pets' accidents
Accidents happen. If your pet has gone to the toilet on a hard floor, be sure to mop up quickly and swiftly using a microfibre mop, hot water and disinfectant. Deep cleaning after such accidents will keep your space hygienic and fresh, for you and your pet.
If the unfortunate happens and your pet relieves themselves on carpet or furniture, act fast and wear gloves. Blot up any dampness with kitchen paper, then use a carpet or fabric cleaner and a firm bristled tool such as the removable centre of the CleanTech™ 2-in-1 Tile Scrubber to brush it into the fabric. Blot dry with kitchen paper so that your pet does not ingest any of the cleaning product. If any smells remain, white vinegar is a good neutraliser of odours, but be sparing as it can affect the pigment in your carpet or furniture.
